Aquanauts CDC, Pattaya City Join Forces to Lead Area's International Cleanup Day 2008
Aquanauts Dive Centre, Thailand’s new PADI 5-Star Career Development Centre, joined a massive community effort to clean up Pattaya’s beaches, islands and reefs during this year’s PADI International Cleanup Day.
Aquanauts and its students from its highly-successful Diving Instructor Training internship program – as well as tourist divers and local residents – took the lead in Pattaya’s Saxophone Bay, bringing up a variety of rubbish including a steering wheel, kettle, light bulbs, batteries and other household rubbish.
They were also able to carefully and safely remove a substantial amount of fishing net from the delicate coral life. Aquanauts finished the day by cleaning up the beach at Saxophone Bay, removing at least 40 black sacks (approx. 150kg) of rubbish, comprising mainly of polystyrene, shoes and bottles that had been washed ashore.
Aquanauts' participation as the city’s leading scuba dive centers was only part of an overall community effort. With sponsorship from the Coca-Cola Co., Pattaya officials mobilized more than 1,500 people, including government departments, private sector businesses and school children, to clean up 10km of Pattaya beaches.
This hugely successful and enjoyable day is of course simply a small part of Aquanauts CDC’s continuing commitment to aquatic conservation on Pattaya’s dive sites for generations of divers and snorkelers to come.
Below are some photos from Aquanauts' day-long cleanup operation.
